Conversational Mandarin Chinese

by Emma Lee

Written by an experienced teacher of Chinese for both children and adults, this conversational textbook, Volume I, introduces Mandarin Chinese to beginning students. Based on conversations of two hypothetical American high-school students, each topic-lesson is woven through their daily lives: their thoughts, their interests, their families, and their communities.

There are twenty-four easily-read lessons consisting of 500 characters and 300 compounds and phrases commonly used in everyday life and activities. Each lesson contains dialogues; a detailed explanation of word usages and Chinese grammar; a list of words that are related to the lesson, to broaden one’s vocabulary; and ending with a review exercise. The step-by-step approach is suitable for class use or self-study.

The author emphasizes both reading comprehension and conversational proficiency as essential in learning the Chinese language. Thus, the origin of 214 radicals and the phonology of Mandarin Chinese are introduced. The former gives a basic understanding of Chinese characters; the latter provides the history of the Chinese language, its various Romanization systems, and the rules of modern spoken Mandarin sounds.

This book employs traditional characters, Mandarin Phonetic Symbols, MPS Romanization, simplified characters, Pinyin Romanization, and English translations throughout the book.

Students who complete this book will be able to read, speak and understand basic conversational sentences that serve a wide range of communication needs.
